Is natural gas better for the environment than oil?
In our last blog, we talked about how natural gas production has been growing rapidly in the United States, and many believe it will help us become less reliant on oil. Apart from the economic and political side effects of making the switch to natural gas, how will this impact our environment? In a country where climate change is a hot-button issue in every campaign, the environmental impacts of natural gas are more important than ever before. So, is natural gas more environmentally friendly than oil? The short answer is yes!
The environmental benefits of natural gas.
As we mentioned in our previous blog, natural gas is much cleaner than oil, and in fact, it is the cleanest burning fossil fuel on earth. Natural gas is also an incredibly efficient source for energy. Natural gas produces far fewer greenhouse gasses, and according to the Department of Energy, if our transportation sector made the switch from oil to natural gas, we’d be able to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by a staggering 90% at the very least and nitrogen oxide emissions could be reduced by up to 60%.
Fracking has made natural gas a viable fuel option because it allows us to produce it right here in the United States. At Well Water Solutions, we offer water storage tanks, water treatment and other innovative solutions to make fracking more efficient and better for the environment. Although natural gas is a very clean fossil fuel, fracking and transporting natural gas can lead to unintentional methane leaks. Stay tuned for our next blog to learn about how many companies are fighting back against methane leaks to make harvesting natural gas cleaner and safer.
